The Cox Family entered into the car business in 1945. Craig Cox, Sr. and his wife Josephine, sold produce to local markets and often traveled to Florida to get fresh fruit. As the produce sales business grew the need for a truck or two came about. Mr. Cox decided to bid on some surplus military vehicles with extremely low bids fully expecting not to win many of the vehicles. Much to his surprise they won most all of the vehicles. He put them in a field at the family farm with FOR SALE signs and their car business was off.
The family began selling used vehicles under the name Cox Brothers Used Cars. Craig Cox, White Cox and Mack Cox each participated. In the latter 50s, Volvo, Hillman, and Simca new vehicle franchises were added. Hillman and Simca fell by the wayside during the 60s. In 1968, Toyota came to Burlington to find a dealer. They inquired at local banks for a used car dealer with sound financials and a good reputation. At every bank Craig Cox was the name recommended. Craig Cox was named a Toyota dealer on October 1, 1968.
In 1971, Mack Cox retired and Whit Cox retained the Volvo dealership. Craig Cox formed a new company, Cox Toyota, Inc. Craig Cox, Sr., Don Cox, and Craig Cox, Jr. led the business. Craig Cox, Sr. went to Heaven in 1976. Craig Cox, Jr. sold his interest to Don Cox in 1982.
The times were tough but through putting his trust in God and hard work Don persevered. Having survived the economic crisis in 1982, the company started on a growth path with the slogan "Tailor Made Toyotas." Customers from the Triad to the Triangle could get cars equipped to their specifications -- only in Burlington -- at Cox Toyota. Toyota buyers beat a path to our door. This growth led to an increase in from 12 to over 75 employees. It also has taken Cox Toyota into a 50,000 sq. ft. facility just off of I-40 at exit 140.
Don Cox has served on the Dealer Council. He has been awarded the coveted Presidents Award eleven times. This award recognizes dealers across the country for outstanding customer service and sound business practices. He's been featured several times in People Magazine.
Cox Toyota has been active in various community affairs -- Red Ribbon Week, Toys for Tots, Wounded Warriors, and Loaves and Fishes.
We truly believe that TOYOTA is the World standard nameplate, and Customer service is the foundation and only reason for our business.
